Home Again!

3 John 1:4

4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.[fn]

It has been more than 10 years since Carol and I have been in San Juan De Limay. Pastor Vicente reminded me that the last time I was here we were ordaining him as pastor of Calvary Chapel of San Juan De Limay. Our old church first came here in 1998 after Hurricane Mitch had destroyed more than half the village. We began to build temporary shelters to get people out of the weather. Every morning our staff would gather together for devotions before work. A church grew out of that small group of men as each one gave his life to Jesus.

A man named Vicente began to show up to the meeting. He was a local drunkard who had led a pretty horrible life of alcohol, drugs and violence. He was curious about these Americans because they were so different from anyone else he knew. He eventually gave his life to Christ and then was discipled by the American pastor. A few years later I had the privilege of ordaining pastor Vicente. He has led the church faithfully through many trials, tribulations and afflictions.

I was so blessed to see that after all these years he is still standing firm, the church is healthy and growing. Vicente taught today from Hebrews 13 about remembering our brothers and sisters in affliction. It was such a reminder to continue in prayer for them.

Please keep Pastor Vicente, his wife Claribel and their 8 children in your prayers.

The Lord continues to show his hand of protection upon us. As we descended into the valley from the mountains we hit some heavy rain. Just before we came to the village we crossed over the river which was running full and fast. We found that within that hour a flash flood had come through and overflowed the bridge by 3 feet. Many of the people who come to church walk 3 miles and were not able to get here because they could not cross the bridge. Pastor Vicente said they were worried about us getting stalled by the rain but knew that God was bringing us and He would carry us through in safety. I was reminded of Isaiah 43:2.

2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.

Please continue to pray for safe travels for the team especially as we make our way out of the valley tomorrow. We will be driving out before the afternoon rains.

The team is all doing well. A little tired from the heat and humidity but all well. This is a great team! God has really united our hearts.

Pastor Gary
